Star Wars > Star Trek ... i'm not a fanboi of either, but do I come with proof? But of course!

The above link is proof positive that people have entirely too much free time, and should (in all likelyhood) put the same effort into sending me lots and lots of money.

though I can watch both and generally follow what's going on, I have to go with star wars because there's only 6 movies, less mark 4 3 6 2 and such when aiming a missle that will miss anyways, and no hour long show on a now horrible tv channel

Star Wars was an entertaining epic-hero storyline. Lucas is a wonderful story-teller but a mediocre director. He did improve by the end of the double-trillogies and gave us a worthwhile and entertaining narrative.

Star Trek started out good but got ridden into the ground by the B & B (Berman and Bragga) plague-of-prequels. This demonstrates a clear lack of creativity and willingness to move foreward, instead dwelling in the past and making no progress whatsoever. As much as I liked the Enterprise series cast (Scott Bakula, Jolene Blalock, etc), I just couldn't stand the show. I was thankful that it was finally put out of its misery at the end of season4. However, B&B still haven't learned their lesson... the next Star Trek movie will supposedly be Capt Kirk and Mr. Spock in their academy days. I can only say 2 sets of words: Enough already! and.... Prequels Suck!

Ron Moore took his creativity from Star Trek into BSG, and now it has a following of its own...

Yeah. It's space opera. You could put it any other setting, doesn't matter if it's lightsabers and the force, or swords and magic, or machineguns and nukes. Same story. Not a terribly original story either, but they're still good movies... four of them at least, I thought Ep. III was a pretty good flick, though not even close to being on par with the original trilogy.

Anyway, I have to go with Star Trek. For one thing, there's more of it to watch, even if we forget about the crappy movies and crappy series (pretty much anything after TNG). Another thing is that it adresses political and social issues in a manner which idiots (like politicians and other ignoramouses) do not notice. They just notice "Ooooooh, pretty laser beams! Beam me up!".

Star Wars is a half-assed, so-so love story inside a kick-ass, epic war story. Not as profound...
